Bad experiences with Couchsurfing: the dark side No, but do you really think those rapists will avoid CS??? You just don't couchsurf as a woman in certain countries if you want to stay safe. I would never couchsurf with a male host in India. It's common sense. I can't hire a detective before accepting an invitation. In CS groups some Indian hosts wrote death threats against someone who posted a link to a US animation movie because they thought it was making fun of their religion. Charming. But hey, don't let facts get in your way. Happy surfing in India. I'll check the crime section to hear more about your trip.

I can understand the sense of the warning -- I wouldn't stay with male hosts in India either, nor in Muslin countries, since sometimes cultural matters can affect the perception towards single foreign females travelling alone (that you're looking for sex, for example). HOWEVER, this is misleading, it gives the impression that CS was involved in this. Please don't ruin your credibility! Not many people nowadays publish the bad side of CS since it became mainstream!

It is related. I'm warning female CS members not to be naive and couchsurf with men they don't know in countries where females, especially single white ones, are often considered easy prey.

Do you have data on this ? I mean getting raped while hitchhiking is a rare event and to my knowledge the few studies that have been conducted about the safety of HH were never able to show real danger.
Jogging is a lot more dangerous than HH (check the rape statitistics, usually it is female joggers that get raped, not HHers) the same analysis can apply to using CS.
The PS Backpacker For women travelers, I recommend making enlightened choice for your hosts, whatever country they go to and whatever network they use for hospitality exchange.
We (2 women) had a fantastic experience being hosted by a family in Rajasthan and I can't imagine what it would have been not to meet these people.
Solo female travelers have to watch out for themselves; families, mostly feminine households or being hosted with someone else is generally safe, yet not a guaranty of safety.
I personally deleted my profile on C$ after being discriminated based on my body image (PS Backpacker = Plus-Size Backpacker) and asking C$ to take action on this blatant discrimination case... and they refused.- Bad experiences with Couchsurfing: the dark side How exactly have you been discriminated against?
